Navigating Video: Choosing the right Production Company for Your Project

The type of production company you need depends entirely on the type of video you want produced and the audience you're aiming for. For companies looking to tell authentic stories, whether about where donor money flows, a company's origin, or a mission in action, documentary production companies are the right fit. Not all production companies work the same way, and choosing the right kind matters.

In general, there are three different types of videos that companies tend to ask us for:

Commercial production is best handled by a company with strong ties to the advertising world. If you need a spot that will air on television, look for a production company that works closely with ad agencies. That's their discipline, and it shows.

Scripted corporate production covers training videos, recruitment videos, and sales content. These projects often involve studios, green screens, and elaborate graphics work. Look for a company that specializes in controlled, scripted environments.

Documentary production is the right choice when you want to tell a story: where donor money flows, a historical video that highlights your company's origin, a milestone to celebrate, a special client, a mission to communicate. These are videos best handled by documentary production companies.

Above all else, documentary work takes experience. With no script or storyboard, the producers and director need a strong nose for the most compelling stories to film. They also need the judgment to pivot when the best-laid plans fall through.

Interviewing skills are paramount. Look for directors with journalistic interviewing technique: people who know how to go deep and elicit authentic, emotional responses from their subjects.

The story arc matters as much as the footage itself. The story unfolds through interviews that need to hold the audience's interest throughout. A good director knows how to grip the audience from the first frame, guide them through the material without leaving questions unanswered, and keep them engaged until the final cut.

For documentary-style work in particular, partnering with a reputable production company ensures your content will be authentic, engaging, and emotionally resonant. The key criteria: experience in documentary production, strong journalistic interviewing skills, a command of story structure and arc, and a team that can navigate the unpredictable nature of filming real life. The right production company does more than just execute your brief. It finds the story inside it. That distinction is worth understanding before you sign anything.
