White House Hubub: An Insider's Story

By the Jynx Productions Team · 3 min read

It's always a unique experience when the spark of an idea transforms into the reality of a camera rolling and a story unfolding. For this project, we were eager to delve into the often-unseen world behind the powerful pronouncements and historic moments emanating from the White House. The initial concept centered on capturing a personal perspective from someone who witnessed history firsthand, not as a political figure or a journalist, but as the individual tasked with meticulously recording it all – the White House stenographer, Beck Dorey-Stein.

Documentary filming with camera operator, director, and interview subject in professional production setting.

As we geared up for the shoot, realizing our time with Beck was going to be very limited, we planned out a handful of camera setups, looking carefully at the lens choices, mic options, ensuring everything is just right for capturing clean video with clear audio. On the day of filming, we were relaxed yet focused, knowing we had planned very carefully during pre production. Once the equipment was set, cables were tidied, lights adjusted, and we waited with the usual quiet anticipation before Beck arrived.

Our primary focus was to sit down with Beck for a nice chat. Having spoken with her many times in pre production, we knew it would be fun filming with her. From the initial friendly banter about shoes to the more serious discussions about the weight of the job, our producer, Johannes, was beginning to steer Beck towards the telling of her compelling story and all the highlights she had mentioned in previous conversations.

One of the most striking moments that emerged during filming, was when Beck began to paint a picture of her sheer proximity to power and the awkward time during the transition between different administrations. She talked about being hired after responding to a Craigslist ad for a stenographer at a law firm. When she got the job and was told she’d be working directly with the President, she asked, “President of what?” We knew we had captured a charming moment with her that offered a true testament to a completely different era. The moment immediately humanized Beck as she described the role and set the stage for the telling of her very unique journey.

Hearing Beck describe the stark contrast in atmosphere and trust between the Obama and Trump administrations was genuinely eye-opening. Her candidness about the "trauma" and "gross" feeling of the transition offers a powerful emotional layer to the story.

There were lighter moments too, of course. The discussion about the heart pin being the best backstage pass injected a bit of humor and revealed the practical, everyday realities of working in such a high-security environment. And the recounting of making heart cookies on the first day, completely unaware of the White House protocol, is a charmingly relatable moment.

Primarily, we wanted to create a space where Beck felt comfortable sharing her personal experiences and reflections. We had specific questions lined up to guide the conversation, prompt anecdotes, and delve deeper into specific moments. We focused on the human element – the individual behind the task of recording history.

As the filming progressed, the crew worked collaboratively, adjusting angles, ensuring Beck felt comfortable, and listening intently to the stories she shared. We felt a shared understanding of the importance of capturing these unique insights.

Bringing the final piece together would involve weaving these interview excerpts together with the limited b-roll coverage filmed that day, creating a seamless and visually engaging flow. The emotional arc of the story, moving from the initial excitement of the job to the complexities of different administrations and the eventual transition to a new life, would be a key element in the editing process. The anecdotes, with their mix of humor, surprise, and poignancy, would serve as anchors, drawing the viewer into the former stenographer's remarkable journey. Ultimately, the goal was to create a piece that not only informs but also provides a deeply personal and human perspective on the inner workings of the White House, as witnessed by someone who was always present, always listening, and always recording.
