American dream: silicon valley founder

By the Jynx Productions Team · 4 min read

We recently ventured to Silicon Valley to capture a story woven with the threads of the American Dream, a dream as vibrant and complex as the technology being built there. From the moment our pitch about a German entrepreneur chasing billion-dollar ambitions, was green lit, the core concept was simple yet compelling: to peel back the layers of the Silicon Valley myth and see the human endeavor beneath the headlines.

Chandler prepped our gear kit for this particular shoot around San Francisco and Silicon Valley. She chose to include the Sony FX3 mounted on a DJI RS 2, a Sony FX6, a GoPro Hero, and a DJI Air 2S drone. The Sony FX3 on the RS 2 proved particularly useful for capturing smooth walking scenes, especially those involving stairs, adding a cinematic element to the footage and making portrait shots look even better. The GoPro was invaluable for capturing second angles during car interviews, and the drone provided stunning aerial views to showcase the location.

We landed in the Bay Area with a sense of anticipation, ready to immerse ourselves in Philipp Wehn's world. What unfolded over the next few days was a rollercoaster of high-stakes meetings, quiet family moments, and the relentless pressure that defines the life of a Silicon Valley founder.

One of our initial filming days saw us trailing Philipp through San Francisco, the city's vibrant energy serving as a backdrop to his investor meetings. The contrast was striking: inside a bustling street café, serious conversations about million-dollar investments were taking place. It was fascinating to witness the informal yet intensely focused nature of these interactions. Philipp, often the only one in a suit, exuded a determined optimism as he articulated his vision. His co-founder, David, the technical heart of the operation, complemented Philipp's persuasive charm with a quiet intensity. “The most important thing is that you build up a good relationship with these people straight away," David shared with us afterwards, highlighting the crucial role of personal connection in this high-stakes game.

A key element of our storytelling is getting close to our character’s everyday lives. So with his permission, we followed Philipp back to his family life in Sunnyvale. Nestled amongst seemingly ordinary neighborhoods, just a stone's throw from Apple’s headquarters, was a life balancing the extraordinary ambition of a tech startup with the everyday realities of raising a young family in one of the most expensive areas of North America.. This juxtaposition became a key element of our storytelling, showcasing the human side of the often-glamourized tech world.

One of the more surprising moments during filming came when Philipp received an urgent phone call from a key investor. The shift in his demeanor, even without hearing the specifics of the conversation, was palpable. The subsequent conversation with us revealed a significant setback: Over a million dollars of funding that seemed secure had suddenly evaporated due to an internal miscommunication. The raw emotion in that moment, the sudden confrontation with a potential existential crisis for his young company, was incredibly powerful and underscored the inherent volatility of the startup world. The fact that we were able to capture this crucial moment shows how invaluable it is to build trust and a rapport with the people we’re filming with.

This setback led us to a pivotal encounter with John Pleasants, a seasoned Silicon Valley investor and former CEO. Their tennis match, followed by a private lunch, became a crucial turning point in our narrative. John's pragmatic wisdom, gleaned from decades navigating the highs and lows of the tech industry, offered Philipp – and us – a valuable perspective. "If founders have a lot of self-confidence, that's good. But you can never rest on your laurels. Because sometimes you get bad news. That happens. It's part of the journey," John shared, his words resonating with the recent turn of events.

The collaborative spirit of Silicon Valley itself seemed to extend to our project. Even in casual conversations, we encountered individuals with fascinating stories and perspectives, from Philipp's friend who had already built a multi-billion dollar "unicorn" to other founders navigating the AI-driven landscape. Their insights, often shared candidly, added layers of depth to our understanding of this unique ecosystem.

As filming wrapped, we knew we had captured a story that went beyond the glossy headlines often associated with Silicon Valley. It was a story of ambition, resilience, and the constant dance between dreams and reality. The final piece, we hoped, would offer a genuine glimpse into the life of an entrepreneur chasing the American Dream in one of the world's most competitive environments, highlighting both the exhilarating highs and the inevitable challenges that come with the journey.

As Philipp himself reflected later, after navigating the funding crisis, "If I look at the last two weeks, I'd say - hey, believe in it, just go full throttle, keep going and hope for serendipity, i.e. lucky coincidences. Just keep believing in the American Dream," a sentiment that perfectly encapsulates the spirit we aimed to capture.
